Haldi [punjabi] = Turmeric [english]
When my grandfather visited he would drink this concoction every morning.
I watched him slowly stir and add spices to a pot of milk on the stove.
7 spices to be exact.
At his blessed age of 103, I asked him how he stayed so strong.
“Simple food, simple thoughts.” he said.
This is the inherent nature of our ancestry that fuels the human body.
The spices in this mixture have the properties to stabilize our digestive system and reduce inflammation. Black pepper may seem like a strange ingredient for a drink, but it’s necessary to activate all of the benefits of turmeric.
There’s something therapeutic about taking 5 minutes for myself, to stir in the spices and boil the milk, but when I’m on-the-go I use my pre-made mix of the spices with the perfect ratios. If this is something you’d be interested in after you try this recipe, let me know ~ would be happy to share it.
HALDI MILK RECIPE
[Serves 1 mug]
To a small pot add 1 1/2 cup of plant based milk (I prefer oat)
Sprinkle in the following 7 spices:
- 1/4 tsp turmeric
- 1/8 tsp cinnamon
- 1/8 tsp nutmeg
- 1/8 tsp ground cardamom
- 1/8 tsp ground ginger
- 1/8 tsp ground cloves
- 1/8 tsp freshly ground black pepper
Stir gently until it’s as golden as the sun.
Allow it to reach a simmer for a couple of minutes until it rises like the sun.
Remove from heat.
Can pour directly into a mug or use a fine sieve to strain the milk into a mug.
Spices may settle at the bottom so keep a spoon in it to stir it up.
Sip slowly and enJOY.
